Many homes that were built in the 50s, 60 and 70s had colors that were not today’s designer colors, especially in the baths. The odds are good that you’ve seen baths with fixtures in Harvest Gold, pink, Avocado or blue. And you may have those colors.
So how do you change these into something that looks current, and remain within budget?
One way to stay with the budget is to settle on white fixtures. And by fixtures I mean the tub, toilet and sink. The manufacturers make lots of white fixtures and not so many in colors. You will pay more for an off-white fixture than a white one.
Now let’s look at those fixtures.
Do you want to do something about that pink tub? You can replace it, which is something you should avoid if possible. Or you can get it re-glazed. There are companies who will re-glaze or re-paint the tub. They can also re-glaze the tile surround. Other companies will install a plastic cover over the existing tub, and can also install a matching tub surround. If you go this route, consider replacing the diverter while you’re at it.
What about the toilet? You can get it re-glazed but don’t. Just buy a new one. Think about getting an elongated bowl and / or a higher one.
And what about the sink? If the existing vanity is still respectable and you don’t want to change it, remove the old sink and take it to a plumbing supply store. Not to a home improvement store with a blue or orange sign. Ask for an exact replacement. That way the new sink will fit the existing countertop. And the plumbing won’t need to be altered to fit. Or you can get a new vanity. Quite often you can get a new countertop with an integrated sink without breaking the budget.
All that’s left is to decide to keep the existing floor or replace it. I always recommend tile for bathroom floors, but some people like vinyl. You decide.
By following these ideas, you can get a fresh look in your bathroom. And you won’t need to sell a kidney to do it.
