Frauds scams and identity theft are increasing. And the numbers are rising.

Beware

Con artists strive to appear to be trustworthy and sincere.  In fact, they use personal information and intimidation to swindle money from their victims. Also, they like to prey upon senior citizens. Here are some of the popular cans making the rounds these days.

Fake Accidents /Fake Arrest

With this one, the con artist tells you a child, grandchild or other relative is in jail or the hospital. Further, that person needs money immediately.

The con artist gets the older adult to withdraw money on the pretext that the older adult’s child, grandchild or another relative is in the hospital or jail and needs money immediately.  In another variation, sometimes a person will say they’re a grandchild, and use their name. They may says they’re in jail in another country – and don’t tell Mom.Next, they ask you to wire transfer money.  Or they may tell you to buy gift cards and give them the PIN #.

Personal info may be obtained from your social media accounts, or the child’s. Before paying, check with the person or the family.

Sweepstakes / Lottery

Of you receive a call or an email saying “Congratulations! You Won!” – hang up or delete the email. With these frauds and scams hey’ll tell you that you need to pay a fee, or taxes or something before you can collect your prize. But – you won’t collect anything.

Home Improvements / Repairs

If a contractor is legitimate they probably don’t go door – to door. And when they say they’re doing a job for your neighbor, look out. Because, if you need some work done around the house, you should initiate the contact.

Bottom Line

It’s been said that you’re not paranoid if the world really is out to get you. In my experience, the con artists really are out to get you. Please – don;t fall victim to these people.
