Friday the 13th, an unlucky day

Everyone knows that Friday the 13th is an unlucky day. Many people say they won’t get out of bed on that day. They are afraid something bad will happen.

Many street addresses skip over the house number of 13. Many skyscrapers do not have a 13th floor. Also many hotels are missing that floor. And who can forget about the movie characters, Jason and Freddie?

So – who knows why it’s considered unlucky?

I knew of one reason, but to be fair, I Googled and this is what I found.

At the famous “Last Supper”, there were 13 people present, and that happened on a Thursday, while Jesus was crucified the next day, Friday.

A popular novel, Friday, the Thirteenth was published in 1907. It furthered the superstition.

A witches coven is said to have 13 members.

And here is the reason that I knew of.

If it happens to be the year 1307, and you happen to be a Knight Templar, you will probably have a very bad day.

You see, around that time, King Phillip IV had a problem. His problem was that the treasury of France was empty, and he was broke. So he decided a good way to replenish his dwindling financial resources was to take the wealth that the Knights Templar possessed. On Friday the 13th, in 1307, he announced that the Knights Templar were heretics, and instructed his forces to arrest them all. He then subjected themto the Inquisition, where many were tortured and killed.

But his forces did not capture all of the Templars, and many escaped and took their treasures with them. And, as far as I can find, those treasures have not been found.

So here’s one last reason that many think Friday the 13th is an unlucky day.

My mother-in-law was born on Friday the 13th.
