I Got Too Much Stuff!

So what will you do with all of that stuff when you move to a smaller home? When we move into an adult community, our home will (hopefully) be smaller. We’ll have less to clean, less to heat and cool, and less room so maybe the kids won’t move back in with us. But there probably won’t be enough room for all of that stuff.

So it is time for you to face the big fact. You need to get rid of some stuff. Start off with the easy stuff. Do you have four bedrooms full of bedroom furniture? Get rid of two of the bedroom sets. You’ll probably get a two bedroom home. And I’m sorry to be the bearer of bad tidings, but the kids will not be visiting and staying over all of the time, so you don’t need it.

Next – tell the kids that if they have anything in your home that they want, come and get it before you throw it away. You will be amazed that they will decide that they really don’t need the grade school and recreation trophies. And all of their other important treasures.

Then it is time for you to look at your treasures. Sort out everything, and make three piles. The first pile is the stuff you feel you no longer need. Be merciless. If you haven’t used it in a long time, get rid of it.

The second pile is the things you use on a steady basis, and you know you will continue to use them. This is the stuff you will take with you.

Now here is the tricky pile, the stuff you think you may need. Guess what? You will not need this! Throw it out!  You don’t have room to keep everything.

Now here’s the really tricky part. After you are in your new home for one year, take a good look at everything you brought with you to the new home. If there is a box that you haven’t opened, or something you have not used, throw it out! You really do not need this.
