Choose Your Retirement Home Wisely

Is it time?

If you are like us, you are thinking it’s time to sell the big house and move to your retirement home. And since there is a severe shortage of available homes in the starter and move up categories, it may make sense to make that move now. But it also may make sense to adapt your existing home to your present and future needs.

Maybe you shouldn’t move

That’s right – did you ever hear a Realtor say that maybe you should not sell your house and move?

Well, if it’s the correct decision for your unique circumstances, maybe you should stay where you are. For us, right now the decision is to stay. You see, over the years, we’ve made the changes that allow us to remain in our home of 30 years. The addition we put on has 36” doors, including the downstairs bath. And the bath has a shower. We have a paver patio ramp going to the front door. All door knobs are levers, and more. So we can stay in our home. At least as long as we can the outdoor maintenance and the stairs going to the bedroom. So far, we’re still good.

But the biggest reason we’re staying here is the grandchildren. We have seven, ages 1 year to almost 11. Four live ten houses away, the rest are within 8 miles. And yes – we are the primary babysitters. And we cannot imagine not seeing them often.

But if we were to move, we would be in a community where we would be with people our own generation, that would (hopefully) share our interests. Right now, we’re surrounded by families in our children’s generation. And while we could move to an adult community that is close to where we are now, it would not be in walking distance for the kids.

Decisions, decisions, decisions.

For now, at least until the grandkids get old enough to not want to be around us, we’re going to stay. But at some point it will be the right decision for us to move to that adult community.
