Should We Grow Old Together?

Humans are, for the most part, social beings. We need to interact with other people. We need the company of others. It’s part of what makes life enjoyable. And many of us have banded together in neighborhoods. This is where we live. It’s where we have raised our family. And by living in a neighborhood, we became friends with our neighbors. Probably the ones who were our ages. The ones who had kids that were friends with our kids.

But times have changed. Our kids are grown. They have moved out into their own homes, and are raising their own children – our grandchildren. And the same has happened to our neighbors and friends. And the neighbors are ready to downsize their homes since they no longer need the big family home. Just like you are considering doing.

So where do you go?

Since you are reading this post, you are visiting my web site, www.55plusinmonmouth.com . And this means you are considering moving to an active adult community. Or maybe you have already made that decision and are looking for a new home. And this is probably a good decision. You see, when you were in the big family home, you were surrounded by people in your generation. And they had many interests that were similar to yours. But as we have aged, our interests have changed. We probably don’t care about the school system and the recreation sports programs that the kids were involved in. And the new neighbors have their own children and their own interests. And they don’t have the same references that you do. And it’s probably not a good idea to play with the neighbors kids without direct supervision from a parent.

But we can relate to people who live in adult communities. They have a similar set of interests. And many want to do the activities that we want to do, the ones that are so important to our physical and mental health. And the effort to maintain a smaller house designed to be low maintenance is a bonus.
