Many of us, as we age, begin to have difficulties in moving around. This may be due to injuries, illness or to put it simply, our bodies are beginning to wear out. This can manifest itself at times when shopping in large stores, where a lot of walking can be involved. Many of the larger stores, supermarkets, warehouse clubs and other big box stores, provide, as a courtesy to shoppers, a motorized scooter. Unfortunately, I never see these at a mall. The best you can find in a mall is a rental wheelchair. These malls are turning shoppers away, as some people cannot walk the distances necessary to visit a mall.
Where the scooters are supplied, the scooters typically have a basket built in where you can put your purchases.
But for places where they don’t have scooters, or for in home use, you can purchase or rent your own. Some scooters are for indoor use only, others a designed for outdoor use in addition. These scooters are battery operated, you will need to plug in the supplied cord to recharge the batteries. The seats are usually wide and comfortable. Steering is via a handlebar, which also contains the necessary controls, such as forward or reverse and a battery indicator. Some models also contain turn signals and lighting. Scooters are usually more comfortable than a wheelchair, and are easier to maneuver, especially inside a home. The drawback is that the units are heavy, and usually won’t fit into a normal car. A mini van or SUV is necessary. These vehicles can usually be outfitted with either a motorized lift or a ramp, which allows you to easily get the scooter in and out for use.
