What Comes After Halloween?

I think every person in America knows the answer to that. It’s Thanksgiving!

The kids, and the kids at heart, have had their day to dress up, be silly and go around asking strangers to give them candy – or else. Remember the term, Trick or Treat? But  I think these days they are going too far with Halloween. It seems to last a week, starting with multiple “Trick or Trunk” events. My grandchildren went to many of these, spread out over about a week. I think this will cause Halloween to lose it’s magic.

But – back to Thanksgiving. I can almost smell the turkey cooking already. Bunny and I love Thanksgiving. It’s a time when we can get almost all of the family together. With our kids and the grands, we are up to 16 now. Plus a few stragglers and adopted family members. So we always have a houseful. As a matter of fact, we like Thanksgiving so much, we have it twice a year. We have “Thanksgiving in July” – or sometimes August. We have the family over for a full turkey dinner. First we swim, then we go inside to eat. It’s great.

Uh-oh. Time for a commercial break from our sponsors, Bunny and Art Reiman – Realtors.

I’m back.

But here’s something that really irks me. It seems the retailers and greeting card companies haven’t figured out how to make money from Thanksgiving. So they go right from Halloween to Christmas. I was seeing Christmas decorations in stores in mid October. There are Black Friday ads on TV already. Hallmark channel on cable has been running Christmas movies, it seems, non stop for weeks already.

Can these guys just give us a break? Give us a chance to be thankful for something. Maybe we can be thankful for a break from the non stop advertising.
